Death Defeating
Death doesn’t discriminate, it comes for all who walk along the fringe of life. As we are pushed to or human capacity, we eventually succumb to the vortex of darkness called death. All living things are eventually swallowed up, but for those created in the image of the creator, those who possess a soul, this is not the end of existence. But, is darkness the only end game? While we’ve seen glimmers of light, our souls have not yet tasted it’s fullness. Hope deferred makes the heart grow weak. So where do we find hope? What does Jesus have to offer in the grave? Can we again walk in the light, walk in goodness, walk with God? Is this attainable with an inadequate righteous to offer. Obedience is easily imagined, but not easily lived. Obedience to the point of death who can even imagine. We, who are well acquainted with disobedience, believe the threat of death justifies our rebellion. For this, many see the death of Jesus as proof of lunacy, but for the few that follow Him, it is the greatest tragedy the world has ever known. Left marveling, even doubting, His followers gave way to fear, under the possibility of following in His footsteps. This is a picture of darkness overtaking the last glimmer of light. True to His word God the Father deliberates and carries out a death sentence for the sins of humanity. While our greatest fear is death, our greatest gift is life. Jesus came to redefine them both. Born of both worlds, he brokered a plea bargain to save the souls of humanity that exclude death. But, what about His death. Imagine the surge of pure light and enlightenment as the news of his empty grave gives way to His triumphant return. Given the magnitude of our sin, simply dying would not be enough. He had to beat death, the evil one’s indefensible weapon. His true identity is revealed, He is more than a man anointed by God. His victory over death proves He is God. Might his authority to raise himself from the grave change our fate. Might we be able to follow in His footsteps? It is clear that this is His plan. Having overcome the lure of the world and bridling the urges of his flesh, he conquers the greatest of our enemies in an earth shattering demonstration of power and rises from the dead. His single act of self-sacrifice was not proof of weakness, but of infinite love and power. This is the only way to honor His father and demonstrate His love for humanity. His obedience pays for our disobedience, rescues us from pending death and frees us from the power of darkness. But how can this be? As the clues flash before our eyes, it becomes clear; he is fully man and fully God, holy and unyielding to the vulnerabilities of His flesh. Subjecting our sin nature to the will of God the father, He restores the hope of humanity and redeems our created purpose, to glorify God as image bearers. Resurrection from the dead leaves no question that He is all powerful. Quiet restrain is unveiled as “omni” power. Power capable of paving a path to everlasting life, for all who dare to believe in Him. We can follow in his footsteps. We can secure the everlasting life we failed to obtain at the beginning of time. For unto them who believe in the power of His resurrection, is given a gift faith.
